Last year Seco Support were privileged to be asked to take part in a Local Government Case Study, which formed part of the publication – Bespoke support for people with learning disabilities and autistic people, an evaluation on the impact consequence for local authorities and councils of delivering bespoke support to autistic people and people with a learning disability, including people who have been detained under the Mental Health Act (or at risk of being detained).
Seco Support were asked to provide support for a young lady who was ready for discharge, but had many failed placements and kept being re-admitted to hospital.
The ‘Wheel of Life’ tool was used to capture the person’s life experience “before” and “after” the bespoke support with Seco took place. This included 10 outcome descriptors, which were scored from 0 to 5 (0 being least, 5 being most):
- feeling calm and safe
- being supported by people who understand me well
- feeling able to communicate and being listened to
- getting out and about
- spending time with people I care about
- feeling healthy
- feeling positive
- being part of my community
- having choice in my day-to-day life
- knowing my rights.
Seco Support were pleased to see such a remarkable change in the young person since support began. Whereas most outcome descriptors began at 1 or 2, they are now at least a 4 or a 5.
