Achieving Independence Through Skill Teaching: A Success Story

Who said people with disabilities are not able to learn new skills?

At Seco Support, we are committed to empowering individuals with disabilities to live the life they choose to live. We are thrilled to share a success story of one of the people we support, who has recently mastered an important life skill: skill teaching, in conjunction with PBS UK.

We have been working with John for over a year now, since he moved into his home in October 2022. He has faced previous challenges in communicating his needs and maintaining effective relationships with his support staff. However, with the help of our skilled support workers and guidance from PBS UK John has now mastered three skills that have significantly impacted his daily life:

  1. Choosing his own staff to support him: With this new skill, John is now making informed decisions about who he feels most comfortable working with and choosing who he wants to spend his time with.
  2. Asking staff to leave when he needs time to process: This has given John the power to take control of his own environment and make changes as needed to ensure his own well-being.
  3. Asking staff to re-engage with him when he is ready: This has given John the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with his support staff, which has been instrumental in supporting John’s relationships with his team.

We are so proud of John’s progress and grateful to be a part of his journey towards independence. Skill teaching is a critical component of our supported living program, and we are committed to helping all of the people we support to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.
